Say Hello
Early one morning, Tiger, Joe and I were sleeping in a pile, cozy on the bed. It was just dawn and the windows were open, birdsong filtering into my dreams. Thumping and knocking sounds woke Tiger and I. We looked at each other, our necks swiveling around to hear more clearly. What was happening? The Ravens! The two of them were making a fuss, squawking and clicking and somehow knocking against the house. It turns out that the recycling had been left outside and they were pulling things apart looking for something tasty to eat.
Sometimes in the field below the barn where the grasses are tall, Tiger weaves through, hunting rodents and other small creatures. The pair of Ravens will sit quietly, alert in the trees above, waiting to share in the bounty.
When we do yoga or meditation on the deck, the Ravens fly overhead, their wings making crisp sounds. On my way home from hiking they greet me along the road, accompanying me home. Every year in the spring, they have a baby or two and the morning quiet is shattered by the babies' croaks and caws.
One of our human neighbors told me that they recently sat on his outdoor chaise lounge to peel and eat some cara cara oranges!
Do you know your neighbors, human or otherwise? Look around and see who lives near you. You can be sure that they have a full life, loving and living right next to you. Say hello if you can!
